The first third of pregnancy can be a confusing time, especially for first time parents.  Each symptom or change can invite excitement and anxiety.  As emergency physicians we frequently evaluate pregnancy problems during this time.

After obtaining a complete history and physical, your doctor will determine what your unique situation requires.  This may include:

  • placement of an IV
  • bloodwork
  • urine tests
  • imaging with ultrasound

Non-Emergency Pregnancy Problems

Not all pregnancy problems are dire. Of course, if you are experiencing some of the issues above, definitely see a doctor immediately. But for other, non-emergency pregnancy problems, here are some helpful tips to deal with the changes going on inside your body.

Few things in life compare to the experience of being pregnant. Carrying a life is one of the most rewarding things that anyone can ever do. Unfortunately, pregnancy can also come with a lot of unpleasant side effects. From water retention and morning sickness to bladder issues, fatigue, and digestive complaints, these pregnancy-related issues can take a real toll on your body. Below are some helpful tips on how to eliminate these problems so that you can feel your best during your pregnancy.

Dealing With Morning Sickness

Even though it is called morning sickness, nausea can strike at any time of the day when you are pregnant. If you tend to feel sick in the mornings, try to avoid jumping up out of bed too quickly. Instead, have a simple snack like some saltine crackers before you get up to help settle your stomach.

Try to stay in a cool environment with plenty of fresh air. Warm spaces that don’t have good ventilation can make nausea worse.

If you find that cooking odors make you more nauseous, consider cooking your food in the microwave. You may find it beneficial to have a salty snack before your meals. Whenever possible, avoid foods that are excessively spicy or that contain a lot of grease.

Try not to eat meals that are too large. Instead, keep the size of your meals smaller and eat more frequently throughout the day. Most experts recommend eating about six times.

Experiment with the time of day that you take your prenatal vitamins. You may find it beneficial to take them later rather than first thing in the morning. Carbonated water or caffeine-free tea can also help settle your stomach. You may want to discuss supplements such as ginger or vitamin B6 with your doctor to see if they might help.

Getting Rid Of Stomach Cramps

Your abdominal area undergoes significant changes during pregnancy. The muscles are constantly being stretched and strained. Over time, this can lead to pain and cramping. Using a heating pad can help minimize this type of pain. You also may find it beneficial to do stomach exercises to make the muscles stronger. Your doctor can advise you on which exercises are the safest and most effective for your situation.

Addressing Swelling

Swelling is a common side effect of pregnancy. Support hose or compression stockings can help reduce swelling in your lower legs. If at all possible, try to stay off your feet. Wear supportive shoes. You may even want to look into shoe inserts that are made specifically for use during pregnancy. Although you may be tempted to take diuretics, you should avoid them since they can cause the swelling to increase. When you are seated, try elevating your legs to minimize swelling.

Dealing With Constipation

If you are constipated, regular exercise may help. Be sure that you are drinking enough water. Consider adding foods that are high in fiber to your diet to help promote healthier bowel movements.

Overcoming Fatigue

Pregnancy can make it difficult to sleep through the night. Whether you feel achy or are having bad dreams, you may not be able to get the rest that you need. Don’t be afraid to compensate by napping throughout the day. Make sure that you are following a nutritious diet that includes extra calories. Double check with your doctor to make sure that you are getting enough iron, as well, since low iron levels during pregnancy are common and can lead to fatigue. As strange as it may sound, exercising may also be beneficial since it can help you feel more invigorated.

Healing Heartburn

Heartburn can often be controlled by using the same techniques that are used to control nausea. Along with wearing loose-fitting clothing, you may also want to look into adding fennel or papaya enzymes to your diet to promote better digestion.

Beating Bladder Issues

Most pregnant women experience bladder problems at one point or another during their pregnancy. It is important to make sure that you are drinking an adequate amount of water. You should also eat healthy foods, avoiding coffee, junk food, and other foods that tend to be acidic in nature. Use the bathroom after intercourse and always wipe from front to back after urinating. You may want to consider adding cranberry juice to your diet or supplementing with vitamin C.

Not every woman will experience problems during pregnancy. The important thing to remember is that any side effects are only temporary. As long as you take care of your body by exercising, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough rest, you should get through your pregnancy without any major issues.
