Walking Pneumonia

Some people have mild pneumonia symptoms and can carry on with their daily routines. They are unaware of the illness that they have. This is called walking pneumonia. This illness is caused by the Mycoplasma pneumoniae organism. Sufferers have flu-like symptoms, fatigue or headaches. Treatment for this is often antibiotics, but for some patients, the illness clears up by itself.

Other causes of pneumonia may include:

  • Pneumonia caused by an infection or an injury to the lower respiratory tract. The resulting inflammation causes pneumonia though other causes could be the aspiration of gastric contents, fluids, or irritants.
  • Pneumonia caused by the inhalation of caustic substances. These can include food, vomit or chemicals. This is called aspiration pneumonia.
  • Smoking, COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Other contributing factors may be heavy drinking, heart failure, or even diabetes, A pre-existing lung disease might also cause pneumonia.
